Case studies

Our nonprofit engagements are tailored to meet the specific needs of each organization, whether through long-term fractional leadership roles such as Chief Operating Officer or Chief Strategist, or through targeted, project-based operational expertise. The length of our engagements have varied from a few weeks to a more than 7-years. Often we are re-engaged after a shorter engagement to help implement our recommendations or to provide similar counsel on different aspects of an organization.

Engagement spotlights

Chief Strategist

A more than seven-year engagement began with a simple SWOT analysis for a sponsored project co-founded by a professional athlete. We were re-engaged to provide strategic guidance on operations, programming, and partner cultivation. Eventually hired as a long-term fractional Chief Strategist, we guided the organization’s transition to a public charity working closely with the CEO to develop financial and HR systems, cultivate a Board of Directors, and expand programming and fundraising using our strategic plan as a guide. The organization has since grown from a $150,000 to a $1.9 million budget, supporting 40 times the original number of participants.

Daily operational support

A rapidly growing social justice organization enlisted our support to assist the CEO and Founder by providing operational oversight akin to that of a Chief Operating Officer. Our role involved managing day-to-day operations, streamlining internal processes, designing new high-profile programming initiatives, and developing strategic growth plans. Additionally, we extended similar support and consulting services to the organization’s sponsored projects and clients. Due to our effectiveness, the initial six-month engagement was extended to 18 months, and we were subsequently re-engaged for another 16 months.

Operational audit

A newly hired CEO of a 100-year-old, mid-sized educational association engaged our team for an operational audit. Our comprehensive research covered five years of board meeting notes, core programming documents, staff interviews, technology assessments, and financial systems. We presented an in-depth report with over 60 recommendations across HR, finance, development, governance, and programming. Within 12 months, 90% of our recommendations were implemented, demonstrating our focus on actionable strategies. A year later, we were re-engaged to prepare the organization for remote work.

Donor-advised fund and fiscal sponsorship review

A social justice organization engaged us to review their donor-advised fund (DAF) and fiscal sponsorship program for compliance, processes and procedures for efficiency, and to offer suggestions on how to grow or enhance the program. They hired a part-time staff person dedicated to implementing our recommendations.
